About your test
- Your doctor / midwife have requested this test as a routine screen for diabetes in pregnancy.
- You do not need to make an appointment for this test.
- The most reliable result is obtained if the test is done in the morning.
- You are not required to fast before your test.
- For your test we require you to remain at Taranaki Medlab for just over 1 hour.
- During this time you will be required to rest. You may like to bring a book to read.
- You will not be able to eat during your test, but will be able to drink water.
- Your must not smoke during your test.
- There is no charge for this test.
- Your test results will be sent to your doctor / midwife within 24 hours.
The procedure
- When you arrive at Taranaki Medlab you will be given a drink containing 50g of glucose. You will be asked to drink this within 3-4 minutes.
- Please tell a staff member if you feel unwell at any time during your test, e.g. if you feel drowsy, dizzy or nauseous.
- A blood sample will be collected 1 hour after you finish the glucose drink.
- This completes your test and you may eat and drink normally.
