Midstream urine collection for urinalysis - culture

To satisfactorily test urine a freshly collected sample that has not been contaminated during collection by bacteria and skin cells from body surfaces is required.

Collection is carried out as follows:-

  1. Seat yourself with knees widely apart to avoid vulval skin contamination.
  2. Commence to pass urine and after about 5 seconds insert cup provided into the stream and approximately half fill.
  3. Remove cup from stream and continue to urinate into toilet.
  4. Transfer urine to sample container until two thirds full.
  5. On completion of sample please discard cup and return sample to reception.
  6. Alternatively if you have collected your sample at home, screw the lid on tightly, and write your name, date of birth and the date and time of collection on the container.
  7. Samples should be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection.
