Rapid transport of most fluid specimens to the laboratory is essential to ensure optimal cell preservation.
Gynaecytology
Taranaki Medlab supplies consumables for the Surepath method of liquid based cytology. Instructions for collection are included in the package inserts.
Sputum
An early morning deep cough specimen in a clean container is preferred.
Transport to laboratory as soon as possible, preferably within two hours.
It is recommended three specimens, each collected on a different day, be submitted. 
If there is to be a delay in transport, sputum may be fixed with methylated spirit.
Urine
At least 20mls of a 2-3 hour whole out put (not midstream) is required.
Early morning urines are NOT satisfactory because of cellular degeneration overnight. Transport to laboratory within two hours. It is recommended that three specimens each collected on a different day, be submitted.
