Specimen Required:

Symptomatic females

Recommended specimen:

Vulvovaginal swab for Chlamydia/Gonorrhoeae using the pink top dry endo-cervical collection swab.

NOTE:

An additional cervical swab using the purple top culture swab with transport medium should be collected for patients with a high risk of gonorrhoeae.

Acceptable specimen:

Endo-cervical swab for Chlamydia/Gonorrhoeae using the pink top dry endo-cervical collection swab

and female urethral swab for Chlamydia/Gonorrhoeae using the blue top dry urethral collection swab

NOTE:

A high vaginal swab using the purple top culture swab with transport medium is required for trichomoniasis, candida and bacterial vaginosis.

Asymptomatic females screening

Recommended specimen:

Self-collected Vulvovaginal swab for Chlamydia/Gonorrhoeae using the pink top dry endo-cervical collection swab.

Symptomatic males

Recommended specimen:

First void urine or urethral swab using the blue top dry urethral collection swab for Chlamydia/Gonorrhoeae.

NOTE:

An additional Urethral swab for gonorrhoea culture using the purple top culture swab with transport medium should be collected for patients with a high risk of gonorrhoeae.

Asymptomatic males screening

Recommended specimen:

First void urine or urethral swab using the blue top dry urethral collection swab for Chlamydia/Gonorrhoeae.

Urine specimens (Male) - patients should not have urinated for 1 hour prior to collection.

Patient should collect the first 15 - 20 mL of voided urine (i.e.: the first part, NOT the midstream). Collect in a sterile plastic, preservative free collection container.

Storage and Transport: Urines: 2 - 8 °C
Swabs: 2 - 27 °C
Specimens should be received at the laboratory the same day as collection
Frequency of Analysis: Daily or as required
Note: It is not necessary to test both urines and urethral swabs on males.
