Dry swabs specific for Bordetella PCR are the test of choice in the first 3 weeks of symptoms. Dry swabs specific for Bordetella are available on request from the laboratory or can be taken by staff at the Medlab premises if uncertain of proper technique. Perinasal swab into nasopharyngeal space is required with flexible shaft swab. Throat swabs taken with routine bacterial swabs are not satisfactory. Testing is performed by Canterbury Health Laboratories. Bordetella culture is no longer available at Medlab. PCR is more sensitive than and remains positive longer than culture. PCR is more likely than culture to detect infection in individuals treated with antibiotics. Serological testing for Pertussis should be considered when a patient presents during the convalescent phase and has not had acute phase testing or if patient has persistent cough >3 weeks. |
